As we all know, Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame was given a G rating back when it was first released in 1996. Since then times have changed, society is far different with how movies are viewed and what is deemed appropiate for certain audiences. With the recent March release of the movie onto blu-ray there was speculation if the rating would remain the same. Well, it still is listed as G, but then it shows that according to Canadian MPA it has been upgraded to PG for frightening scenes and violence. The sequel however stayed as a G rating. Also something to note, look at how it is written up on the back cover of the blu-ray:
"Rediscover the majestic musical adventure of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame II - together for the first time in stunning Blu-ray high definition. Bring your family together for the extraordinary tale of Quasimodo in a soaring celebration of the beauty inside all of us! Join the world's most unlikely hero as he meets his first real friend, Esmeralda, while fighting to save the people and city he loves. The legendary story continues as Quasi reunites with his gargoyle friends to protect the cathedral's most famous bell and find true love. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame soars with a magnificent score by renowned composer Alan Menken (Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin). Enjoy both magical films, bursting with brilliant animation and unforgettable characters, together on Disney Blu-ray. "
Hmmm, notice no mention of the antagonist, Frollo? Everything sounds so cheery and upbeat, tricking parents into thinking this is a safe, kid-friendly movie, heh!

Well, at any rate, it's awesome that the movie has received this little boost, bringing some form of attention out to the general audience. People who haven't seen it in quite some time were pleasantly surprised to find it now available for blu-ray and wished to add it to their collection. It even has brought forth some new fans, which is always great. They can then also look to other versions and even read the original novel if they haven't done so already. Anything to help keep the story alive.
Take care for now, everyone!

I agree with you. "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" was advertised very deceptively, and I feel it should have been rated PG instead of G by the MPAA. I wrote this article comparing "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" to the 1993 movie "The Fugitive":

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame versus The FugitiveThe plot of a person wrongfully accused of a crime he or she did not commit seems to be a popular plot in Hollywood. Alfred Hitchcock tackled it in Saboteur and North By Northwest. Many TV shows such as Monk have used that plot line. Even Disney has used it in the 1996 film The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is a dark film about Judge Frollo's pursuit of Esmeralda that I think sends the wrong messages to the public. A better movie to watch would be the 1993 Warner Brothers film The Fugitive. Let me explain why.
Advertising and Promotion
Neither The Hunchback Of Notre Dame nor The Fugitive are films that I would consider family-friendly. But there's a distinction I make between the two. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is promoted as a bright, cheery, upbeat musical when that's not really what it is. The Fugitive is promoted as a dark, serious film, a more honest representation of the film's content.
